Sugar and Rusty

Blanche was commonly and affectionately called Sugar.

Grandpa Bert

Grandpa Bert in Morristown, Arizona.
Here he is with his grandson, Skippy at this desert home.
Robert Williams (Grandpa Bert) was the husband of Granny Jo and father to Afton Williams.
Skippy's real name is Stephen and he is the son of Pearl Williams.

Petrea and Frihoff at 1901

It looks like they are sitting in some sort of wheeled contraption.
They are just waiting for someone to give them a push.

Nona Faye

Nona Faye is PappaDaddio's oldest child.
She was born in 1937.
PappaDaddio was a very young father at the time of her birth.
Nona and her brother, Gary were both born prior to PappaDaddio leaving for Europe during WWII.

Cousins

These 4 kiddos are cousins since their moms, Murle and Pearl are sisters.
From left to right we have John, Ann, Charles and Kathy.
John, Ann, and Charles are the children of Pearl and Kathy is Murle's daughter.

However, the children are in a different order with less balloons.

Playing Dominoes

The kids are busy playing dominoes on the floor at 1901 Mesa Dr.
Starting on the left we have Gerald, Pearl, Marie, Petrea and Frihoff.

Marie, the family photographer

This photo is of the Connie and Gerry family at the 1901 house in Mesa.
In the front we have Pearl and Gerald.
In the back row we have PappaDaddio, Bill holding Frihoff and Connie holding Petrea.
In the back corner we have man's best friend.
Since Marie seems to be nonexistent in this photo, I would guess she is the photographer.

The Prize Steer

Gerald was a member of Future Farmers of America in high school.
As his animal project, he raised a steer which he showed at competitions and an auction.
Here is Gerald posing with his steer.
It is a very good looking steer.

Jeremy commented - I'm guessing this is my Dad's childhood friend Guadalupe in the picture. Anyone know for sure? They used to run around together playing Robin Hood, and Guadalupe gave my dad a copy of the book, with a note inside the front cover that said, "Billy and Guadalupe, best friends". It's old and battered, but I still have it.

Sling Shots

Connie always strived to dress well and to dress for the occasion.
She strived to look her very best for her entire life as seen in this photo.

The old Chino Valley Chapel

The first LDS building for all of northern Arizona was built in Chino Valley.  The LDS church was organized in the area in 1918 and the work on this building commenced in 1919.  A man by the name of Artimus Millett donated the land and Oscar Despain was the rock mason for the building.  (Oscar Despain's ancestors still live in the Prescott area.)  

The members living in and around the Prescott area would travel to Chino for their church meetings.  They continued to travel to Chino until the first building was built in Prescott in October 1928.

The building was built by the members in the area and the native blue granite stone that was used to build the building was quarried from the Granite Mountain area.  The stone was brought to the building site by truck.  However, the tires on the truck were not able to support the heavy weight of the stones.  The members removed the inner tube from the inside of the tires and then wrapped rope around and in the tires to better support the wheels.

The building is 2 stories tall with the baptism font being in the lower level of the building.  It was dedicated on June 15, 1924.  The building still stands today but was sold by the church when the new chapel was built at the other end of Chino Valley in 1972.  In fact, the last meeting was held in this building on September 24, 1972.

Wesley Scott and Dick Allen helped construct the building as young men.  Warren Hoopes Allen was the 1st branch president in this area.  Warren Allen was the son of Charles Hopkins Allen & Elizabeth Adelaide Hoopes.  He and Elijah Allen were brothers which would make Warren Hoopes the uncle of Gerald Mecham Allen.

Family Campouts

The Allen family annual camp-outs were the highlights for many people.  It was fun to see how much the grandchildren had grown and how much the older generation had changed (aged).  PappaDaddio was famous for the work he put into the camp-outs to make sure everyone had a great time.  Here is a photo of PappaDaddio and his son, Bill at one of these camp-outs.

Rusty wrote the following on the Allen facebook page:

This is the house your mother and father (Gerald & Connie Allen) bought after they were married. It is (if it is still there) just north of 27th South and just west of 21st East In Salt Lake City. I remember going there before your folks moved to Arizona.

Afton and a military plane

Afton Williams Allen is the young lady who is 4th from the right.
This plane looks like a B17 bomber.
Luke Air Force Base would be the closest military base that would house planes of this size during the war.
The young lady who is 3rd from the left shows up with Afton in other pictures.

Connie & Pearl - sisters

Pearl and Connie are standing together at their home in Mesa.  Pearl is Connie's sister and younger than Connie by three years.  Pearl was born in 1929.  As you can see in the photo, they both have some sort of tag attached to their blouse.  Not sure what they are but they look like price tags.

Bill

Bill is the oldest child of Connie and Gerry Allen.

The couch in the picture has a unique pattern and is probably remembered by many of his siblings.  Also, behind him on the wall is a picture.
I could not enhance it enough to determine what it is but maybe someone remembers.

Sugar

Blanche Williams was born to Else Johanne Anne Marie Nybo and Robert Adelbert Williams on the 10th of April in 1921.  Blanche was known by the nickname of Sugar in the family.  Sugar married John Elmo Henrichsen and they had a son named Rusty.  Sugar lived her life in the Salt Lake area and passed away in 1980.

Granny Jo & Siblings

This is a photo of Granny Jo and her siblings.
In the front (L-R) is Else Johanna Anne Marie Nybo and sister Anne Jensine Kristine Nybo.
In the back row (L-R) we have Carl Mikkel Knudsen Nybo, Margaret Katrine Nybo, and Conrad Lundsgaard Nybo.

Granny Jo was one of ten children, born to Mikkel Knudsen Nybo and Inger Katrina Olesen.  Her parents had a thing for names.  I will list the other children in order of age, so you can see all the unique names of their children and give us a better understanding of family names.

Frihoff & his guns

Frihoff enjoys shooting guns.  He enjoys skeet and other target shooting with his shotguns.  

According to this photo, Frihoff's interest in guns began a long time ago.  Frihoff is front and center in this photo.  If you look closely he is holding a toy pistol and wearing a really cute pair of holsters. 

Frihoff's dad (PappaDaddio) and brother (Gerald) are standing behind him to the right. Bill is jumping on the trampoline while Pearl is sitting on the trampoline watching him.

Baby Tiffany

Frihoff is looking down on little baby Tiffany who is lying on the BIG pillow that sat in the front room of the 1901 house in Mesa.  Frihoff should be about the age of a deacon at the time of this photo.

Standing on the car

At first I thought we had Petrea and Frihoff standing on the famous trampoline again.  However, upon closer inspection I discovered they are standing on a car.  Their big sister, Pearl is with them in the photo but she is not standing on the car.  It is possible that she is the one that put Frihoff and Petrea on the car in the first place.

Rocking Horse

Gerald on his rocking horse

As a young child, Gerald was so full of energy that a rocking horse was bought to help wear him out.  As the story goes Gerald would even rock himself to sleep on the rocking horse.  He would rock until he passed out from exhaustion and would fall off the rocking horse onto his bed.

Have you ever wondered what would have happened if he fell off the wrong side of the horse?  After hitting the floor would he have gotten back on the horse and repeated the process until he fell off the right side of the horse?

Regardless, this photo give some validity to the stories about Gerald and his rocking horse.

Radiator Water

Do you remember in an earlier post there was mention of places along the road for cars to stop and put water in their radiators?  In the old days, car overheating was a problem even if they were great cars like this one.  Places that had long climbs and steep climbs tended to have these radiator water locations.  Here is PappaDaddio as a young man putting water into his car at one of these locations.  I would guess that this photo is after the war and after he had married Connie due to other similar photos.  This would place PappaDaddio in his late 20's.  He married Connie on the 11th of August in 1946 when he was 28 years old.

Frihoff in the box

There are so many photos of Frihoff in boxes and water troughs, that one has to wonder whether the way to babysit Frihoff was to put him in a box.
Was Frihoff some sort of an escape artist?
Perhaps it was the easiest way to keep track of him.
Maybe Frihoff just liked being in boxes.
Who knows.

This photo shows four of Connie and Gerry's kids.  Of course, Frihoff is in the box.  From left to right we have:  Gerald, Marie and Pearl.

It looks like the photo was taken at the 1901 house on the cement slab in the backyard. 

Marie

Marie is the second child but the first daughter of Connie and Gerry Allen.  

The following two photos show Marie as a young child.  In the first picture Marie is possibly around 2 years of age.  In the lower photo she is possibly about 1 year old and is learning to walk.  The lady helping Marie to walk could be a family friend named Barbara Millett or it could be great-aunt Margaret Nybo.  There are other photos of Barbara Millett in a small inflatable swimming pool when Bill and Marie are about this age in this same yard which is the reason for my guess.

Granny Jo & Verne

Granny Jo and Verne Hicks are the people front and center in this photo.
However, if you look closely  there are 5 more people who can be identified.  Starting in the lower left hand corner, half of Marie's face can be seen.  Then in front of Marie, you can see Frihoff and Petrea sitting at the picnic table.  In the middle of the photo is Mother (Afton) with her husband Gerry (Gerald) standing behind her.  The photo would have been taken most likely taken around 1962 due to Petrea's age and Granny Jo died in 1967.

Marie Williams

This is a photo of Marie Williams.  Marie is the 3rd daugter of Robert and Else Williams.  She is just older than her little sister, Afton Williams Allen.  In the photo she is wearing an army uniform.  It is uncertain as to why she is wearing it.  Marie lost contact with her family for many years so little is known of her life.  She was a dancer and lived in the Las Vegas area.
