This is a photo of Granny Jo and her siblings.
In the front (L-R) is Else Johanna Anne Marie Nybo and sister Anne Jensine Kristine Nybo.
In the back row (L-R) we have Carl Mikkel Knudsen Nybo, Margaret Katrine Nybo, and Conrad Lundsgaard Nybo.

Granny Jo was one of ten children, born to Mikkel Knudsen Nybo and Inger Katrina Olesen.  Her parents had a thing for names.  I will list the other children in order of age, so you can see all the unique names of their children and give us a better understanding of family names.

Metta, Ole, Jens and Bertha all died in infancy while Anne lived to be 100 years old.

Granny Jo & Verne

Granny Jo and Verne Hicks are the people front and center in this photo.
However, if you look closely  there are 5 more people who can be identified.  Starting in the lower left hand corner, half of Marie's face can be seen.  Then in front of Marie, you can see Frihoff and Petrea sitting at the picnic table.  In the middle of the photo is Mother (Afton) with her husband Gerry (Gerald) standing behind her.  The photo would have been taken most likely taken around 1962 due to Petrea's age and Granny Jo died in 1967.

  AnneMarie - I have a picture of me in this very same spot 

smile emoticon (behind the house on Southgate Ave.) I know Granny Jo died when I was quite young (3) but I do have one vague memory of her. I love that I'm named after this special woman!

Pearl -  Granny Jo, I believe at the Southgate home.  Rusty - Correct - to the left there is the door to the cellar. My kids thought it was real creepy to go down there.

AnneMarie -  that's because it was! Although Sugar had (what I thought was) a cool wringer washer down there.

Granny Jo is standing by Marie, Bill and Rusty.  Marie and Bill are the children of Gerald (PappaDaddio) and Afton.  Rusty is the son of Blanche (Sugar) Williams and Daddy Moe.

Granny Jo is Afton Williams Allen's mother.
She is a Danish convert that came to the U.S. as a young girl speaking only Danish.
Granny Jo is with her oldest daughter, Murle Williams Hicks in this picture.
Granny Jo is known for her full name - Else Johanne Anne Marie Nybo Williams.
Imagine having to sign or even write that name.

It has been many years since this history of Granny Jo was compiled by Aunt Pearl.  She had a very strong feeling at the time that her grandmother's story needed to be told.  The experience of writing this history brought Aunt Pearl and her maternal grandmother closer together.  She found the great internal strength and faith this pioneer woman possessed.  The promise of Elijah of sealing families was truly felt through this writing experience.  Aunt Pearl hopes that her history will draw her closer to you as well.
